After I got off of work on Tuesday, we drove up to Phoenix and had a pre-birthday celebration for our family in Phoenix. We had one of Joseph's favorite foods, hot dogs, and Jodie made some cupcakes. It was all a big hit with Joseph.
After dinner, Joseph got to open some presents. His cousins Annie and James were extremely excited for Joseph to open his presents and were more than willing to coach him through the process.
Alex was also more than happy to help teach Joseph how to play with some of the toys.
It was really funny and cute how excited Joseph's cousins were to help him with his birthday presents. Your first birthday is probably the only birthday when you wont mind having helpers opening your presents.
One of first hits of his new presents was a little Nemo bath toy; i has a string you pull and the tail starts flipping. I don't know what it was, but he started busting up laughing while watching Nemo flip his tail. He even laughed so hard that he tipped over.
Thank you everyone who came to his party and made it so fun and special.
The next morning, we flew out of Phoenix and started out trek to Hawaii. Joseph did really well on the flight and is becoming quite the little frequent flier. While he slept for over half of the flight, he was definitely ready to get out an stretch his legs after the six hours in the plane. The only downside of him wanting to walk is that it took a really long time to reach the baggage claim in Hawaii. But hey, totally worth it to have a happy little boy and we actually ended up getting there before the bags came off the belt and ours were some of the first.
Although I don't have any pictures of it, we got some very nice leis from Jodie's parents for our arrival; it was very special for us and very thoughtful.
As soon as we got to Mom and Dad's house, we started working on preparations for Joseph's party, but we had a few nice breaks. For example, Auntie Kat taking Joseph out to see grandma and grandpa's chickens.
Joseph was amazed by the chickens almost as much as he is by dogs.
Plus you have to have some time to eat. Especially when it is Hawaiian red hot dogs and poi.
And make some faces at Grandma. Dinner just isn't dinner without puckering your lips and scrunching your nose at least once.
During this trip, we have also discovered how much of a cookie monster Joseph is. From one of grandpa's big frozen cookies to animal crackers, this boy is all about cookies; one of the joys of finally having some teeth.
Oh how we love our cookies...
Even when we make a huge mess.
Joseph's new trick lately is that he has mastered pointing with his finger. This has made reading books very fun.

One of Joseph's favorite parts of the preparation was all the inflatable toys that we had to get ready for the party.
It is hard to contain so much excitement.
Here was the final product- a place for the little kids play during the party.
It looks like it will work like a charm.
Joseph also had a lot of fun hanging out with grandma while she was kitchen.
Even washing dishes is a lot of fun at grandma's house.
Another special treat for turning one is that we can have ice cream.
He definitely enjoyed it, but especially doing it by himself.
You definitely get spoiled hanging out with grandma. For anyone wonder what he's eating, it is a cookie.
Here is a picture of the cake that Jodie made for Joseph; it turned out really nicely.
